‘Mix That Scratch is an experimental piece in which I have used designs relating specifically to the area that my parents come from in the Cook Islands, animated to sound mixed by DJ Fast Eddie. A representation of myself and also, in a sense, of other urban Polynesian youths in Auckland because as it happens there are more Polynesians living here than in the Islands themselves.’ - Veronica Vaevae

    I’m British But, 1990
    Director: Gurinder Chadha

    30 mins/Betacam SP

‘The evolution of British Bhangra and Bangla music marks the beginning of the end of British national chauvinism for those of us who have been born and brought up here. It has helped us define ourselves as a migrant community with a musical language of our own, created by us, for us, but open for enjoyment by all.’ - Gurinder Chadha

I’m British But uncovers a defiant popular culture - a synthesis - part Asian, part British. The film presents a strident new perspective on British nationalism.
