Raewyn Turner’s SONNET 1.6.02 SYNOPSIS “Sonnet”, 3.30 mins. The graphic programming environment , Isadora, was used to acivate video images using the sound of my voice reading the measurements sonnet. Playing in the background is a backyard Guy Fawkes party. Every 6 months over a period of several years I am documenting my four sons ( now aged 7, 10, 13, 16) by regularly videoing them in their home environment, four changing, interwoven lives, alongside their height, weight, body measurements and pocket money. Every 6 months a new measurements sonnet will be written and this will activate the fresh video images. Thus over a number of years a video poratrait will be constructed from three and a half minute segments. Each short video also stands as a work on its own. This work looks into the windows of my children’s lives and their transformations over time, in a basic pattern-forming process, the mana of sharing emerging realities. In The Manual of the Holy Catholic Church Pub Chicago 1904. which was passed down to me by my Italian grandmother, there is a section titled :The Religious and Moral Training of Children which advises to watch over your children, then, for it is your duty. And remember, that the best watchers are those who can watch without seeming to watch I am watching them through the lens. The first Sonnet portrait which I made last year was shown in ‘Videotree’, Firenze, Italy December 2001.
