An experimental environment to be moved through.
paralla x is a study in motion: of the body and its traces of movement through time and space, of train journeys and the liminal, meditative spaces they induce, and of light and the optical illusion of movement. It combines video, light, sound and an austere model railway activated by movement sensors triggered by the passage of the viewer.
Currently a senior lecturer in Performance Studies at Victoria University, Jude Walton studied Drama and Telecommunications (film, sound, video) in the UK, has a Postgraduate Dip. in Movement and Dance from the University of Melbourne and is currently enrolled in a PhD examining the notion of the book as performance/performing the book.

The traveler’s orientation on train, plane, or ship is, in the main, at right angles to the direction of travel. The world, viewed through a rectangular window passes from left-to-right or right-to-left. Notwithstanding the sudden appearance of hills, trees, stations, tunnel walls, suburban houses, industrial estates, fog, rain, sunshine the traveler remains largely detached from the environment, which rushes or passes by.

paralla x developed as part of an artist-in-residency at RMIT, in the School of Architecture through the support of the New Media Fund of the Australia Council. The residency generated a new series of video and light works that explore a study in motion: of travel, movement and how, as physical beings we experience this.
Jude Walton worked with dancers and a biomechanist over a period of 4 months, using a range of equipment designed to measure the moving body to create an installation utilizing light, video and sound and a model railway triggered by the passage of the viewer.
